Take a look at how Central Coast Council responds to other animals, such as livestock and horses. This includes what you need to do if you find a deceased animal.

Stray livestock animals

Council Rangers may attend to stray livestock on public land. The types of stray animals that our Rangers will collect include:

• cattle
• horses
• goats
• sheep
• pigs
• alpacas

Council Rangers will attempt to secure the animal and organise suitable transport to one of Council’s Animal Care Facilities (ACF’s) for holding while efforts to contact the owners are made.

Council Rangers will not collect small domestic animals such as rabbits, guinea pigs, ferrets, chickens, or roosters. 

Rangers will not respond to animals straying from private property to private property. This is a civil matter and/or a fencing issue. 

For wild animals causing a nuisance, please contact National Parks and Wildlife or WIRES for advice.

Horses

As horses are a mode of transport, they can be ridden on roads or footpaths and owners do not have to clean up after them. Complaints can be made to Council however, if horses are being ridden on a reserve where signage prohibits this.

Dead animals

If you find a deceased animal on public land, report it to our Customer Service Centre on 02 4306 7900 so it can be collected.

If a deceased cat or dog is found, they will taken to a local vet or the nearest Animal Care Facility to be scanned for a microchip. If identified, the owner will be notified.

It is the responsibility of the property owner or tenant to dispose of deceased animals on private property. If the animal is a dog or cat, please take it to a local vet or the nearest Animal Care Facility so it can be to be scanned for a microchip and the owner can be notified.

Deceased animals found along the Pacific Highway, M1 or the other major arterial roads, should be reported to Roads and Maritime Services on 132 213.
