Smartphone workshops for seniors

Join our friendly, informative and free 10-week program designed to help seniors get the most out of their Android or Apple smartphones and tablets. Just one hour per week, from 10-11am on Tuesdays from 2 September to 4 November.

Each workshop covers a different topic, with the final week dedicated to revision and Q&A.

2 September 2025 – Week 1: What is the internet? What is the web?

Start your digital journey with a clear and engaging introduction to the internet and the web. This workshop covers:

  • A simple overview of what the internet is and how it works
  • A brief history of its development
  • The many services that rely on the internet
  • How websites function, including platforms like WordPress
  • The difference between static and dynamic websites

9 September 2025 – Week 2: Mobiles and tablets

This session helps you feel more confident using your smartphone or tablet, whether it’s Android or Apple. Topics include:

  • What are apps and how to use them
  • Taking and sharing photos
  • Using voice control features like Siri or Google Assistant
  • Using touch screens
  • Key differences between Android and Apple (iOS) devices
  • Communicating with SMS, WhatsApp, Facebook Messenger and FaceTime
  • Tips for avoiding spam calls and scam messages

16 September 2025 – Week 3: Security

Learn how to protect your personal information and stay secure while using your device. This session covers:

  • Creating and managing strong passwords
  • Understanding two-factor authentication (2FA) and passkeys
  • Using biometrics like fingerprint or facial recognition
  • Spotting scams
  • Keeping your device updated and secure

23 September 2025 – Week 4: Social media

Discover how to connect with friends and family through popular social media platforms. Topics include:

  • Introduction to Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, X and more
  • Basics of social media marketing

30 September 2025 – Week 5: Online banking

Access online banking with confidence. This session includes:

  • How to transfer funds and pay bills online
  • Setting up direct debits and notifications
  • Keeping your banking information secure

7 October 2025 – Week 6: AI

Demystify AI and learn how it can help in everyday life. Topics include:

  • What is AI and should we be afraid of it?
  • ChatGPT
  • Practical uses of AI
  • Fraud detection
  • Virtual assistants
  • Predictive analysis
  • Medical uses

14 October 2025 – Week 7: Online shopping

Shop smarter and safer online. This session covers:

  • Creating accounts on shopping websites
  • Spotting scam sites
  • Tracking shipping

21 October 2025 – Week 8: Government services

Get familiar with essential online services. Learn how to:

  • Create and manage accounts on MyGov, My Aged Care, Medicare and Centrelink
  • Link services
  • Navigate these platforms

28 October 2025 – Week 9: Email

Master the basics of email communication. Topics include:

  • Differences between webmail, desktop clients and mobile apps
  • Freemail services (Gmail, Outlook, iCloud) vs corporate email
  • Preventing spam and managing filters
  • Using attachments and address books
  • Comparing Outlook, Microsoft 365 and Mac Mail

4 November 2025 – Week 10: Revision and Q&A

Wrap up the series with a session to review key topics and ask questions. Bring your notes and any lingering queries - this is your chance to consolidate your learning and gain extra tips.
