Central Coast Council is set to commence construction on the Terrigal boardwalk project and rockpool restoration works in April 2020.

The project, jointly funded by Council and the NSW Government, will deliver many benefits for the community. This boardwalk will significantly improve pedestrian access between Terrigal Beach promenade and The Haven - providing a safe and more inclusive, accessible route around the headland so everyone in our community can enjoy this ocean front area. In addition, this project will help grow tourism and boost the local economy.

Central Coast Council’s Unit Manager Economic Development and Project Delivery, Jamie Barclay said construction works are currently scheduled for completion by the end of the year and ready for public use early January 2021, however the schedule may be impacted by weather or other unforeseen events.

“The tender has been awarded to Land & Marine Ocean Engineering Pty Ltd, a company with existing employees on the Central Coast. The company has provided a commitment where possible to employ local Central Coast subcontractors and labourers as well as sourcing locally supplied equipment and materials," Mr Barclay said. 

“We have been in consultation with our local community and businesses right from the beginning, and from the consultation that was undertaken we know the majority of our community and local businesses support this project.

“We have listened to our community and incorporated the feedback we received on the draft concept design into our final design, which maintains access to the rock platform and provides an inclusive ramp into the rockpool.

“We have also taken into account all studies and an environmental assessment to ensure all impacts and risks have been considered with the design to complement the natural environment and will be composed of materials that can withstand the elements to ensure longevity and ease of maintenance.

“We are grateful to the NSW Government for funding the project which will deliver many social, health and economic benefits for our community.”

Council was successful in securing a $2.9million Restart NSW Regional Growth Environment and Tourism Fund grant for the boardwalk from the NSW Government and committed an additional $2.9million through the yearly capital works budget to deliver this project.

The 277-meter-long boardwalk design includes a viewing platform, integrated seating, lighting, access to the rock platforms and smooth integration with the existing walkways either end, which creates a continuous link to the town centre. 

The delivery of this project has also been planned to minimise inconvenience, ensure safety and reduce the construction impact on residents, local businesses and tourists.

Works on the new Terrigal Boardwalk have also been programmed to coincide with the renovation of the rockpool at the southern end of Terrigal Beach, to minimise disruption to the community and costs for both projects.

The rockpool renovation project is supported by a $250,000 grant from the NSW Government’s Crown Reserves Improvement Fund.

Parliamentary Secretary for the Central Coast and Member for Terrigal Adam Crouch said the funding was first provided to Central Coast Council in August 2017.

“It’s great to see this project finally begin and I know our community will be thrilled the rockpool and boardwalk are being constructed simultaneously,” Mr Crouch said.

“The rockpool has been a popular spot for families since it first opened in 1954, and this much-needed upgrade will help restore it to its former glory.

“Work will involve replacing the foundations and walls, constructing an access ramp and linking the area with the new boardwalk and existing pathways.”

Site establishment will begin from the end of March 2020. From this time until the end of the construction period, access to the area around the footprint of the boardwalk and rockpool will be restricted, plus a small section of the Terrigal Haven carpark will be closed. Users of the foreshore areas are advised to adhere to onsite signage and not to enter the construction area.
