25/06/2025Central Coast Council has invested $300,000 to launch the regions first permanent Moving Image Gallery (MIG) – a dynamic space for cutting edge, immersive art experiences on the Central Coast.
Gosford Regional Gallery installed the new gallery as part of celebrating 25 years in 2025.
Central Coast Council Director of Community and Recreation Services, Melanie Smith said the new Moving Image Gallery is a major step in the regional gallery’s history especially poignant in its 25th year.
“Council is committed to delivering high-quality exhibitions and programs that support local and national artists to exhibit and connect with all people.
“The decision to invest into the immersive gallery space followed an operational review of the gallery and extensive consultation with our community.
“Permanent space for digital based work will draw more established and emerging artists to the Coast. It will attract a broader culture-loving audience from near and far,” Ms Smith said.
Gosford Regional Gallery has supported contemporary practices and moving image works over the last 25 years however this is the first time the gallery has a permanent dedicated gallery space for this medium.
The new Moving Image Gallery (MIG) opens the doors for screen-based artists to enter Gosford Regional Gallery’s annual awards - the Gosford Art Prize.
In honour of its 25 year celebrations, this year’s major prize is $25,000, plus an additional $10,000 being offered for Moving Image Art award.
Central Coast Council Mayor, Lawrie McKinna said the Moving Image Gallery represents an exciting leap forward for arts and culture in the region.
“I am excited to introduce the Moving Image Gallery to the Central Coast which will attract more people to our region, strengthening our local business and economy.
“This new digital gallery at Gosford Regional Gallery helps support and grow established digital artists, is innovative and a fresh way for people to engage with contemporary art on the Coast. I hope many in the community, including the wider art community, will be inspired to connect with it.
“With the launch of the Moving Image Gallery at Gosford Regional Gallery and a new creative ‘maker space’ at the Gosford Regional Library launched later this year, 2025 is a progressive year for culture and innovation on the Central Coast," Mayor McKinna said.
The first artwork to showcase at the MIG, John Power’s Wander and Dwell, is a real-time generative video and sound artwork responding to the natural local topographic environment.
Visitors are invited to journey across the Central Coast landscape in a real-time, immersive experience. It’s an experience not to be missed!
Wander and Dwell launches 5:30pm 27 June at the MIG, Gosford Regional Gallery. Exhibition closes 29 August 2025. Free entry.
