Exposure 2018: Celebrating the art of photography

Central Coast photographers will have many opportunities to enhance their technical and creative skills as part of the 2018 Exposure Photographic Program. The broader public is also invited to come and see the best the Coast has to offer in open galleries and public art.

Exposure is the Central Coast Council’s annual photographic program. The program aims to promote the art of photography and to showcase still-based works. Every two years, a coastwide competition is held for amateur and emerging photographers. This year, in the interim, a festival of photography will take photo-media to the broader public.

Welcome to the 2018 program…

Held throughout June, this year’s program focuses on skills development for photographers of all ages, with a series of workshops on location, school-based mentoring and an artist-in residency program. Public art displays and an exhibition trail will complement the workshop program to help expand audiences for amateur and professional photographers.

Council Director Connected Communities, Julie Vaughan, said that since its inception in 2014, the Exposure program had grown from a grass roots competition to a comprehensive program which builds the Coast’s creative industry and encourages tourism and the use of open space.

“The 2018 Exposure program offers capacity building for local photographers, which will enable them to submit a very high standard of entries in next year’s Exposure photography competition,” Ms Vaughan said.

“Exposure competitions will now be held every second year, with a focus on skill development in the alternate years.”

Free and paid workshops include:

  • astro photography
  • darkroom magic (for children, 6-12 years)
  • landscape masterclasses for adults and children
  • digital editing and post production
  • on-location workshops
  • sun prints (for children, 3-6 years).

In two of our main town centres, an open-air exhibition will showcase the work of amateur and emerging Coast photographers. Each work was chosen because it tells a story about people and place. Running for two weeks in each venue, the exhibition will be launched at The Entrance on 2 June and Terrigal on 16 June. Each launch will be a celebration, with jazz music and digital projections marking the event.

Also at The Entrance, a wheat paste mural will be displayed on Coral St from 22 June. Working in documentary photography, professional photographers Hilda Bezuidenhout and Edwina Richards are mentoring100 students from five local schools to create this artwork.

Throughout June, visitors will be able to see exhibitions of iconic images of Coast landscapes at Terrigal’s Glenn McKimmin Gallery and Erina Heights’ Ken Duncan Gallery. At The Erina Centre Foyer Gallery, a social documentary series will showcase the stories of the families, carers and friends of people experiencing mental illness. The exhibition was produced as part of an Artist-in-Residence program with photographer Danielle Minnett at ARAFMI’s Lerida House.
