COUNCIL SERVICES STATUS:
WATERWAYS
TUGGERAH LAKES
The Tuggerah Lake at Long Jetty is currently at 0.63m* and rising, below the minor flood level and may reach the minor flood level (0.90m) overnight (Monday 19 May 2025). Further rises are possible with the predicted forecast rainfall.
* Please note at the time of this update, Tuggerah Lakes at Long Jetty is recorded at 0.70m at 1pm, the 0.63m was posted when the Bureau of Meteorology posted their Flood Warning earlier today. However the Toukley gauge is displaying 0.84m at the same time (1:00PM). The strong southerly winds are increasing lake levels in the north near Toukley, and correspondingly reducing them in the south at Long Jetty. Although the Long Jetty gauge is used as an indicator of lake height, the average lake height, or the height should wind conditions ease, would likely be somewhat higher than it is at Long Jetty and lower than it is at Toukley.
CURRENT STATUS – The Entrance Channel and the pilot channel remains open, and was continuing to show a clear tidal signature at Long Jetty yesterday, which indicates a strong exchange of water between the lake and the ocean. This tells us that no mechanical intervention at The Entrance Channel is required at the Entrance Channel to help minimise flood impacts at this time.
LAGOONS
CURRENT STATUS – All lagoons are open and below trigger levels.
Council intervenes to open our coastal lagoons (Wamberal, Terrigal, Avoca and Cockrone) when their water levels reach their own trigger level. View current water levels and trigger levels.
For more information on Council’s management of waterways head to our Estuaries, Lagoons and Wetlands page here.
BEACHES AND COASTAL EROSION
Crews are monitoring erosion at vulnerable locations across the Coast.
Where there is coastal erosion, it’s important to keep personal safety front-of-mind and the advice is to:
- Avoid areas impacted by coastal erosion, sand loss or water damage.
- Stay away from beach escarpments, and do not intentionally collapse eroded beach escarpments – this is both dangerous and could cause further risk to properties in the immediate area.
POLLUTION ALERTS
Heavy rain and flooding can cause stormwater run-off and sewage overflows to pollute our lagoons, waterways, rivers, lakes and beaches. It is strongly advised not to swim or go in the water:
- At our beaches for at least 24 hours after heavy rain
- At our lagoons, waterways, rivers and lakes at least three days after heavy rain.
- Pollution alerts are currently in place for a number of Central Coast beaches, head to the Beachwatch website for daily pollution forecasts.
If you come in contact with waterways and feel unwell, please seek medical advice from a doctor or hospital or call Triple Zero (000) in an emergency.
ROADS AND TRANSPORT
Heavy rainfall is causing widespread flooding and road closures across the region.
Check known road closures here
Motorists are reminded that flood conditions and road closures can change rapidly during severe weather events, often with little notice. Updates will be provided as soon as practical. Please obey signs and do not move any road barriers or signage – these are for your own safety and that of others.
Heavy rain is expected to continue. Stay inside if possible. If you need to drive anywhere, please plan extra travel time, take extra care. Never walk, ride or drive through a flooded road.
