30/05/2025Avoca Lagoon foreshore maintenance works
If you walk, swim, paddle or use foreshore pathways around Avoca Lagoon, you may notice lagoon maintenance work is underway as part of Council’s long-standing commitment to foreshore management and public safety.
From Monday 26 to Saturday 31 May 2025, sand relocation work is being carried out. Sand is being relocated from the lagoon entrance to replenish eroded areas along the northern foreshore, particularly near Bareena Wetland.
Why is this work needed now?
Erosion along the northern foreshore of Avoca Lagoon has, over time, exposed water and sewer infrastructure, degraded public access paths, and contributed to the damage of sensitive foreshore vegetation.
Relocating sand that has built up at the lagoon’s entrance, to the areas where sand has been lost, will restore safe beach access, minimise vegetation damage, and protect public land.
This work serves to complement long-standing lagoon and foreshore management at Avoca, supporting the health of the foreshore and enhancing this valued public open space for everyone to enjoy.
What will the work involve?
- Heavy machinery will be operating near the lagoon entrance until Saturday 31 May 2025.
- The southern foreshore carpark at Ficus Avenue will be closed for the duration of the works and reopen on Monday 2 June 2025.
- A temporary bridge has been created across the channel to allow machinery to access the site. This will be removed when works are finished.
