30/09/2024The Coast’s next generation of young people is being called upon to apply for Central Coast Council’s Youth for Youth (Y4Y) Leadership program, designed to equip local 15-24 year olds with the skills and confidence to lead and inspire change in their communities.
Applications are now open for this exciting opportunity to be at the forefront of creating and implementing projects that matter to youth in their community.
Council Director Community and Recreation Services, Melanie Smith said the program fosters a generation of informed and confident individuals who can advocate for the needs and interests of their peers.
“Now in its sixth year, the Y4Y Leadership Program strengthens community unity, drives positive social change and ensures that the voices of young people are represented in local decision-making processes,” Ms Smith said.
“The program provides participants with practical experience in leadership, project management and event planning, preparing them for future challenges and opportunities.
“We’ve seen the current Youth Action Team successfully deliver a diverse range of school holiday programs including skateboard art design, hip-hop workshops and street art sessions. They have also engaged in podcasting and event media, producing content for the Y4Y Instagram channel, and participated in discussions with local and state government representatives regarding youth issues on the Central Coast.”
Further key highlights from 2024 Y4Y’s Action Team:
- First aid training: offered three free first aid courses, equipping young people with vital job-ready skills.
- Team building: conducted virtual reality sessions focused on enhancing leadership skills and teamwork.
- Awareness campaigns: developed social media content to raise awareness about youth-related issues and promote events and programs.
- Event hosting: successfully hosted the Central Coast Council’s Youth Awards.
- Photo competition: actively participated in judging the Your World Your Way photo competition.
Central Coast Council Administrator, Rik Hart said the program offers an opportunity for Council staff to mentor and guide young leaders, contributing to a more vibrant, inclusive and forward-thinking community.
“Central Coast Council’s Youth for Youth Leadership program is about building a legacy of empowered youth in our community,” Mr Hart said.
“I encourage young people on the Central Coast to apply to join the Y4Y Leadership Program and empower themselves with the skills to create impactful projects, connect with like-minded peers and make a difference in the community.”
Applications for the 2025 Y4Y leadership program open 30 September and close Friday 15 November 2024, with successful applicants announced 14 December 2024.
