Central Coast Council has installed 19 new CCTV cameras in Terrigal and Copacabana to increase the community’s sense of safety in these popular local neighbourhoods.

Now operational, the 13 CCTV cameras in Terrigal and 6 in Copacabana were jointly funded by a $550,000 grant under round two of the Federal Government’s Safer Streets Programme and $90,000 from Council’s operating budget.

Cameras in Terrigal are located on Terrigal Drive, Kurrawyba Avenue, The Scenic Highway, Ash Street, Terrigal Haven and The Skillion.

Cameras at Copacabana are located in Del Monte Place, Pampas Avenue, Copacabana Skate Park and Captain Cook Lookout.

Mayor Jane Smith said that she welcomed this partnership with the Federal Government. “CCTV cameras are a proven deterrent for crime and anti-social behaviour, and these additions augment the already successful introduction of cameras at Kariong, Kincumber, Gosford and The Peninsula”, said Mayor Smith.

“We are grateful for the financial assistance we have received through the Safer Streets Programme and expect the cameras will impact positively on the safety of our local communities.”

Statistics sourced from NSW Police indicate that over the last 10 years (2006-2016) in Gosford CBD alone, personal crime in streets with CCTV installed decreased by fifty percent.

Federal Member for Robertson Lucy Wicks said the cameras deliver on another Coalition Government commitment from the 2016 election.

“The installation of new CCTV cameras is a significant win for the many business owners, families, and residents who lobbied for this funding to make Copacabana and Terrigal safer for everyone,” Ms Wicks said.

“We know that the best way to tackle crime and anti-social behaviour is to stop it from happening, and that is why this key 2016 election commitment is so important to the community. I commend Central Coast Council for their work in rolling out these cameras in Terrigal and Copacabana so quickly.”

“This investment builds on the Safer Streets funding already delivered from the Coalition, which provided CCTV cameras in Woy Woy, Kariong, Kincumber, Gosford, Umina and Ettalong Beach.”
