Council calls on community to slow down and stay safe on the roads over Christmas

Central Coast Council is reminding motorists to be safe on the roads as the summer holidays kick off.

There are a number of safe driving tips motorists need to be aware of with an influx of visitors expected to the Central Coast, as well as a number of residents who take road trips with their families.

Double Demerits will be in force from 12am Thursday 21 December until 12am 2 January 2018, and will apply to a range of things such as speeding, not using a child restraint, illegal mobile phone use or riding without a helmet.

Council Mayor Jane Smith is encouraging residents to slow down these holidays and be aware of their surroundings.

“As the Coast is a popular holiday destination, we are expecting an increase in traffic and pedestrians in locations around our beaches and play spaces – so please take care in these popular areas,” Mayor Smith said.

“Speeding remains the greatest cause of death and injury on our roads, so please slow down and stick to the limit.

“We are pleased to be working with the Little Blue Dinosaur Foundation again to promote their Holiday Time campaign, encouraging our community to be more aware of others on and near the road.

“We want everyone to have a safe and enjoyable holiday.”

This time of the year is also a great time to celebrate with family and friends. If alcohol is involved in the celebrations, Council is encouraging everyone to organise their Plan B to get home safely – whether it’s through public transport, a designated driver or staying at a friend’s house.
