R U OK day

Take the time to ask RUOK?

This year, R U OK? Day is on Thursday, 12 September, 2024.

Nearly half of all Australians (45%) will experience some form of mental illness during their lifetime.

With such high statistics of people suffering a mental illness, it is not surprising that every day eight Australians die by suicide and one in four people say they know someone who has taken their own life.

The Central Coast consistently has some of the highest number of deaths by suicide in Australia each year.

R U OK? Day is a National Suicide Prevention initiative that encourages Australians to ask their friends, family, colleagues or neighbours “are you ok?” and be prepared to encourage action if someone is struggling with their mental health.

Asking for help isn’t always easy, but you don’t need to be an expert to reach out. Starting a conversation could be as simple as:
1.    Asking RUOK?
2.    Listening
3.    Encourage Action

Council aims to inspire and empower our community to meaningfully connect with the people around them and start a conversation with those in their world who may be struggling with life.
