We're transitioning our Buttonderry and Woy Woy Waste Management Facilities to a fully cashless payment system from 1 July 2025.

This change supports our commitment to improving efficiency and delivering modern, streamlined services.

Why go cashless?

  • Only 5% of customers currently use cash.
  • Handling cash is time-consuming and requires external collection services.
  • Going cashless will help reduce wait times and lower operational costs.

Recycling remains free

You can still drop off a wide range of recyclable items at no cost, including:

E-waste (TVs, computers, phones)
Glass bottles and jars
Batteries
Scrap metals (bikes, trampolines, whitegoods)

This is the next step in aligning our waste services with the cashless model already in place at our customer service centres.

  • Council is streamlining the way it accepts payments at its waste management facilities by moving to a digital-only payment model. Going cashless will minimise the costs that come with handling, counting, and banking cash while improving transaction time and traffic flow through the weighbridge thereby leading to a faster, more efficient service. Currently, only 5% of non-account holders use cash, and those transactions make up just 3% of total payments by value.

  • Yes. Under Australian law, businesses – including local councils – can set the terms of agreement of how the payment will be made, as long as this is clearly communicated before a transaction takes place.

Council has communicated the terms of the agreement of not accepting cash payments through signage at the entry to the facility and at both the inbound and outbound weighbridge windows. This ensures customers are aware of the payment terms before using the service.

  • Council accepts payment through the following physical cards:
    •    Eftpos (debit and prepaid)
    •    Visa and Mastercard (credit, debit, prepaid)

Council does not apply payment surcharges for card payments.

Regular customers may also open a Bpoint Account through the Commonwealth Bank. A form is required to be filled out, emailed to waste@centralcoast.nsw.gov.au. After a Council staff member creates a customer account for the listed vehicle registrations, CommBank sends a link to the designated email to the Bpoint customer which requests you to securely enter your credit card details. Council does not keep any credit card details. Payment will then be processed through the Bpoint system each time an authorised vehicle registered to that account makes a transaction.

  • Yes. There will be cost savings through streamlining the way the facility accepts payments, for example, by going cashless to minimise costs that come with handling, counting, and banking cash and reduced risk of theft or fraud.
