Pearl Beach artist Annie Reid has taken out the major prize in the prestigious Grandma Moses Art Competition, which attracted a record number of entries this year.

The painting of the Californian beachside suburb San Clemente is on display at the Grandma Moses Exhibition in Gosford. The exhibition features 244 works by some of the Coast’s most talented artists. Entries were open to artists aged 50 and over.

Council Director Connected Communities Julie Vaughan said the competition, now in its 36th year, shows it is never too late to learn new skills.

“This year’s Grandma Moses program attracted a record number of entries from new artists, with 36 entries in the novice category,” Ms Vaughan said.

“The Grandma Moses program is more than just a popular art exhibition – it is a celebration of the talents and contributions seniors make to the cultural fabric of our community and highlights continual learning and achievement for people of all ages.

The popular art competition and exhibition is inspired by the life and work of Anna Mary Robertson, better known as Grandma Moses, who became widely famous for taking up painting in her late seventies and painting more than 1,500 artworks until she passed away at 101. Her success and creative talent proves age is no barrier.

The exhibition is at the Gosford 50+ Leisure and Learning Centre, 217 Albany Street North, Gosford. It is open daily 10.30am - 4pm until Thursday 13 September.
