Second stage of Avoca Beach foreshore redevelopment gets underway

Central Coast Council will start the second stage of the $2.8million coastal foreshore and rehabilitation works at the southern end of Avoca Beach next month.

The second stage, which will be carried out from May-October 2019 (weather permitting), will involve redeveloping the seawall to include stairs, two concrete ramps and a disability access ramp, as well as upgrading the beachfront walkway and general landscaping.

This $2,807,000 foreshore redevelopment has been enabled through funding from the NSW State Government under Stronger Communities Funding made available to all newly merged Councils.

Mayor Jane Smith said Council had listened to the community and has made changes to the design of the second stage of this priority project for the area.

“This upgrade will continue the improvement to the infrastructure and amenity of the area, as well as deliver vital coastal protection and rehabilitation works to stabilise the foreshore,” Mayor Smith said.

“As a result of community feedback, the two small beach access ramps will now remain in place and be upgraded with new materials for increased accessibility.

“Overall, this upgrade will provide both the Coast community and visitors with a safer and more accessible foreshore area, activating the area for all to enjoy. It is when Councils work with other levels of government and their community that great things can be achieved.”

Member for Terrigal Adam Crouch said the NSW Liberal Government was proud to fully fund the project through the Stronger Communities Fund.

“Our strong NSW budget means we’re able to deliver improved public spaces in our local area,” Mr Crouch said.

“Stage 1 of the Avoca Beach foreshore improvements have been a huge success and have been positively embraced by the Avoca community.

“I look forward to the delivery of stage 2, which will further enhance Avoca Beach for locals and visitors alike.”

Council will work with the contractors to minimise the impacts the works will have on foreshore users and has scheduled major work to avoid the peak holiday season from May to October 2019.

New drainage construction works will be done in conjunction with the foreshore upgrade during April and May 2019, but will be funded separately. It will involve laying large box culverts through the Avoca Drive carpark on the eastern side of the surf club. During these works the carpark will be closed off to the public north of the amenities block.
