Check in on R U OK? Day

Thursday 11 September is R U OK? Day. The day is earmarked to remind us to check in on the people around us and ask them ‘are you okay?’

This simple question could be a life changing moment.

We all experience challenges, setbacks and unexpected events. Checking in on people, listening with an open mind and encouraging action can help someone open up.

Every day, opportunities arise to ask how someone’s going at home, at work, in your team and social groups. If they’re not ready to talk right away, they’ll know you’re someone they can approach later.

Council is committed to community wellbeing and supports initiatives that encourage good mental health.

Recently Council, in collaboration with Umina Bunnies Junior Rugby League Football Club, unveiled a mural on the Melbourne Ave sports building at the Peninsula Recreation Precinct.

Part of an initiative that included a youth mental fitness workshop in partnership with professional NRL player and mental health advocate Nicho Hynes, the mural includes a QR code linking to support resources, making it easier for people to access help when they need it.

So take the opportunity to reflect on the people you know this R U OK Day.

Although you may feel a little hesitant to ask, R U OK Day organisers report that nine out of 10 people feel grateful, supported and cared for when someone genuinely asks them if they're okay.

You’ll find conversation guides and a range of useful information at www.ruok.org.au.

And if you’re the one who’s struggling, please seek help and support from a counselling service or by calling Lifeline on 13 11 14.
