Storm recovery on the Coast

The Central Coast community is continuing to recover from the severe weather that lashed our region in March 2021. 

To date, we have:

  • collected more than 306 tonnes of wrack, including from the road reserve in front 180 residential properties around Tuggerah Lakes, and flood debris from over 4km of foreshore
  • collected 710 tonnes of debris from beaches: Terrigal 615 tonnes (seaweed), and the remainder from Patonga, Umina, Ettalong, Killcare, Avoca and Shelly Beach
  • repaired more than 3,000 potholes across our road networks
  • made safe 22 landslip sites within road reserves
  • identified 15 sites of significant road damage with four repaired, nine made safe with interim works, two scheduled for repair and three remaining closed due to severity
  • completed 4,400 bulk kerbside collections across the Coast in the two weeks post the storm event
  • commenced composting 882 tonnes of seagrass and seaweed which will be processed into soil products

The Central Coast community has delivered:

  • 127 tonnes of storm related waste to Council’s waste management facilities with over 70% of this material diverted from landfill
  • 1.38 tonnes of seagrass wrack to Councils waste facilities free of charge.

Daily bulk kerbside bookings have increased from an average of around 600 collections per day in the weeks immediately prior to the flood event to around 1,000 collections per day post storm. Residents are reminded that Council will ensure flood affected bulk waste is collected, however collections must be booked through the 1coast website or on 1300 126 278.

Residential waste services 

Waste and recycling services will continue as usual. 

Our waste collection services are also continuing in accordance with normal scheduled days and increased resources have been allocated to manage the increase numbers and volumes of bulk kerbside collection bookings made for the week.

    Removal of seagrass wrack and vegetation debris

    Various options are available for residents who have been flood affected to remove seagrass and other floating vegetation debis from private property including:

    • Place small volumes of seagrass and vegetation debris into your green waste bins. Place non vegetative waste in the red bin or as part of a bulk kerbside collection.
    • Take it directly to Council’s waste management facilities – Council will waive gate fees for the delivery of seagrass wrack and other vegetation debris which has deposited in properties following flood waters subsiding. Residents are requested to minimise contamination of this material with other waste types at the time of collection to enable composting.
    • If there is too much to place in the green waste bin or transport, please stockpile and place seagrass and vegetation debris in a safe location next to access roads or pathways within foreshore reserves, or the road kerbside outside of your property. Once placed on the kerbside, call Council on 1300 463 954 for a ‘Tuggerah Lakes Seagrass’ booking or book via the 'Report an issue' form on our website and we will be able to assist with removal.

    Can I take storm damaged bulky household and organic garden waste to the tip?

    If you need to clear excess flood impacted bulk household waste and debris from your property as a result of the severe weather, you can book a standard bulk kerbside collection for both excess garden waste and normal bulk waste accepted by 1coast. This waste will be collected within a week of booking, generally on the next scheduled bin servicing day. Residents can book up to six general or green waste bulk kerbside collections a year of two cubic metres per allocation. Bulk kerbside entitlements are reset annually on 1 February.

    Residents can also dispose of their flood impacted bulk waste directly at one of Council’s two waste management facilitiesReduced fees apply as a result of the NSW government waiving the waste levy for flood impacted waste.

    • Buttonderry Waste Management Facility – 850 Hue Hue Road, Jilliby
    • Woy Woy Waste Management Facility – Nagari Road, Woy Woy.

    What do I do with used sandbags?

    Split the bags to remove sand and place in your garden where it won’t wash away. Place bags in the red lid garbage bin.

    Public property and commercial company waste

    Council will remove fallen trees and debris from the road and public reserves over the coming weeks.

    Businesses should use their private contract waste services or can deliver to one of Council’s waste management facilities - normal fees apply.

      Recovery assistance

      With a declaration of natural disaster for the Central Coast, support services are available for impacted residents to aid recovery. Resilience NSW is the lead disaster management agency for NSW, responsible for all aspects of disaster recovery.

      Reach out for support

      The NSW and Australian Governments have announced a disaster recovery assistance package. If your home or belongings have been damaged or destroyed, a lump sum payment of $1,000 for eligible adults and $400 for each eligible child under the age of 16 may be available.       NSW Health provides basic hygiene advice during the flood and clean-up period. Some helpful tips include:

      • Wash hands thoroughly with soap and clean water after handling flood-affected items or participating in any flood clean-up activities, after going to the toilet and always before handling or eating food.
      • Avoid coughing or sneezing on others and avoid the use of common or unclean eating utensils, toothbrushes, towels or handkerchiefs.
      • Avoid all unnecessary contact with mud and floodwaters. If you must walk through mud or enter floodwaters, always wear solid shoes, not thongs or sandals. Always wear gloves when handling flood-affected items or mud. Keep children out of flood-affected areas.
      • All cuts and abrasions should be cleaned, treated with antiseptic and covered immediately. If you have a deep cut or wound, if a wound has had contact with floodwaters or if a wound develops redness, swelling or discharge, seek immediate medical attention.
      • Avoid being bitten by mosquitoes. Use an insect repellent on exposed skin areas and reapply every couple of hours. Cover up as much as possible with loose-fitting and light-coloured clothing. Should you or any of your family have severe diarrhoea or vomiting, please seek immediate medical assistance. If you have these symptoms, you’ll need extra fluids to replace what you lose. The best fluids to take are those that contain a mixture of special salts (electrolytes) and sugars, (e.g. Gastrolyte) which can be purchased from local pharmacies.
