Central Coast Council is once again encouraging residents to clear any unwanted hazardous chemicals in homes, garages and sheds to be correctly disposed of at the next bi-annual Chemical CleanOut events.The events will be held over two consecutive weekends on Saturday 22 and Sunday 23 February at the Event Park, Kariong (off Kangoo Road) and Saturday 29 February and Sunday 1 March at Long Jetty Depot, corner of The Entrance and Wyong Roads (turn left into Morris Place), 9am-3.30pm each day.Council Unit Manager Waste Services and Business Development, Andrew Pearce said for the first-time residents will be able to drop off up to 100 litres of paint.“It is fantastic to see an increased amount of paint accepted as it is consistently the most collected item, often accounting for more than half of the total amount dropped off,” Mr Pearce said.“All other materials continue to have a 20 litre or 20 kilogram maximum container size per item and paints must also be in containers of 20 litres or less for the health and safety of handlers.“I would urge everyone to use this opportunity and have a good search around their property to ensure safe and responsible disposal of any potentially hazardous items.“This includes any unknown or unidentified items as they will be accepted for identification and correct disposal.”Other items accepted include car and household batteries, smoke detectors, pesticides, gas bottles and fire extinguishers as well as fluorescent globes and tubes.Only household quantities are accepted.

Flanked by its iconic palm trees and unique three-sided design, Central Coast Stadium is about to ring in its 20th anniversary in style with the community invited to join in the celebrations.On Saturday 8 February the stadium will open its gates for a fun-filled day of celebration to mark this important milestone.The first 300 people to attend will receive free ice-cream and ‘chips on a stick’.

Central Coast Council’s ‘Chalk the Walk’ will see the pathways and open spaces at Waterfront Plaza at The Entrance transformed with an explosion of chalk art.Locals and visitors are invited to engage with an interactive pavement gallery featuring a large 3D artwork and an additional six pieces by renowned master street artist, Anton Pulvirenti, and a further 10 chalk masterpieces produced by local artists.Central Coast Council Unit Manager Community Partnerships, Glenn Cannard said ‘Chalk the Walk’ will be an exciting celebration of this unique form of street art.“People of all ages and interests will appreciate this great event that showcases the work of a master street artist and incredible local talent, Mr Cannard said.“Chalk art lets artists use the pavement as their canvas and sees physical spaces temporarily transformed in amazing ways.“Head down to The Entrance and experience this year’s chalk art  – interact with the art and enjoy the live music and entertainment throughout the day.”Mayor Lisa Matthews said Chalk the Walk will offer a number of different ways for the community to become part of the creative streetscape.“Children of all ages are free to go wild and express themselves on the chalkboard snake, and there’ll be an opportunity for 10 local artists to take part in the event,” Mayor Matthews said.“We invite the community to grab their cameras, head down to The Entrance and ‘strike a pose’ in front of some of the most creative artworks you will ever see on the pavement.”The free ‘Chalk the Walk’ event will be held on Saturday 22 February, 12-8pm.For more information visit centralcoast.nsw.gov.au/whatson/chalkthewalk

Central Coast Council has engaged an independent consultant to undertake an audit of the key decisions made regarding the development of Central Coast Airport.This review responds to Council’s decision made on 25 November 2019.Four projects have been identified as part of the review which will look at all decision making-processes to understand timelines, documentation, delegations and due diligence processes.The projects identified are:The project to establish a regional airport at Kiar RidgeThe proposal to develop an aviation hub at the Central Coast AirportActivities, including works and development applications lodged, by the current Council or former Wyong Shire Council relating to works at the Airport siteProcesses and decision-making relating the Airport and Wyong Employment Zone.Submissions close Tuesday 17 March 2020.

Central Coast Council welcomed 28 young people to its staff last week as part of its popular Early Career Pathways Program.At a special ceremony, Mayor Lisa Matthews welcomed the group and congratulated 15 others who successfully completed nationally recognised training programs with Council in 2019.During their 12 months with Council, university students complete an Undergraduate Program in areas as diverse as engineering to environmental sustainability and social science.

Central Coast Council will shine the spotlight on a range of services and resources available to seniors by bringing them together under one roof for the Seniors Expo on 13 February 2020.The inaugural event, held during Seniors Festival 2020, will feature a variety of stallholders and key presenters from businesses, services and community groups around the Coast.

Following a rigorous tender process, Central Coast Council has awarded the contract for construction of the Mardi to Warnervale Pipeline to joint venture partners Spiecapag and Seymour Whyte.The $61million pipeline is one of the region’s most significant infrastructure projects which will boost water supply to the Central Coast’s rapidly growing northern suburbs and improve water security for the entire region.Mayor Lisa Matthews said the Mardi to Warnervale Pipeline project is the next major step to enhance the Central Coast’s water supply network.“The 9km pipeline will run from the existing Mardi Water Treatment Plant through to Sparks Road at Warnervale providing water supply to our growing community in the north,” Mayor Matthews said.“The pipeline will also help drought-proof our water supply by enhancing transfer capability between the Central Coast and Hunter.

Copacabana residents can look forward to improved water supply for years to come as work on the next stage of Central Coast Council’s Water Mains Renewal Program prepares to get underway.Work on the $600,000 project will begin on Monday 3 February with the replacement of over 400 metres of water mains that have reached the end of their design life.

The popular Love Lanes Festival in Wyong is back for its fourth year on Saturday 8 February, presented by Central Coast Council and The Chapman Building.This year’s festival features guided tours along the Wyong Heritage Walk, as well live music across four stages, roving entertainment, food and market stalls, a kid’s zone, circus precinct and art installations.Council Unit Manager Community Partnerships, Glenn Cannard said Love Lanes is a chance to discover Wyong’s hidden gems and immerse the whole family in the buzz, hype and vibe of this unique outdoor festival.“The festival will transform Wyong’s heritage laneways and town park into an exciting hub of art, culture and culinary experiences,” Mr Cannard said.“This year, visitors can also take a virtual tour and experience what the buildings and streetscape of Wyong looked like 100 years ago.”Mayor Lisa Mathews said the 2019 Love Lanes event attracted approximately 15,000 festival goers and injected over $1.1million into the local economy. “Love Lanes showcases some of the best Wyong has to offer and I’d encourage community members and visitors to lock in this year’s date and join in the fun,” Mayor Matthews said.“This festival goes from strength to strength and has been instrumental in changing the profile of Wyong for visitors, residents and investors alike.”The festivities kick off at 4pm and run until 9pm.

The local community of Wadalba will see their ideas come to life with the construction of a new playspace and recreational area at Voyager Street Reserve.Construction commenced on 28 January and is due for completion by the end of April 2020, weather permitting.To ensure this community space reflects the values and preferences of this growing community, Council undertook community consultation by way of an online survey, with feedback guiding the development of the concept plan for the reserve featuring the new local level playspace.Council’s Director of Environment and Planning Scott Cox said the playspace has been designed to provide a shared active space for the many young families that live in this growing area.“This inclusive playspace includes a multi-play unit with numerous slides and climbing ropes, a swing set incorporating a nest swing, interactive panels, see-saw and balance play equipment with partial rubber softfall surfacing and a pathway network for improved accessibility.“In addition, park furniture, shelters and a water re-fill station will also be constructed to enhance the play and stay experience.”Mayor Lisa Mathews said playspaces are valuable areas for our community to socialise and for kids to learn through active play.“Council has listened to the community and understands how important the need is for this playspace at Wadalba.

Australia Day honours for 2020 have recognised 11 exceptional Central Coast community members including Olympic silver medallist Matthew Graham who was named ‘Citizen of the Year’.Mayor Lisa Matthews said Australia Day is an opportunity to acknowledge extraordinary Australians and in particular members of our very own Central Coast community.“Australia Day is a time to reflect on our history, to celebrate our achievements and to look to the future of our country,” Mayor Matthews said. “I would like to particularly acknowledge our Indigenous community, the Darkinjung people, who play a vital role in shaping the future of our region.

Central Coast Council has started an assessment of the region’s 1,000 kilometre network of footpaths, bike paths and shared pathways.Quad bike style vehicles will be used to capture video imaging of every Central Coast pathway to assess current condition and inform renewal strategies to improve connectivity, mobility and safety.Council Director Roads, Transport, Drainage and Waste, Boris Bolgoff said the region-wide assessment was part of Council’s commitment to the ongoing maintenance, improvement and development of the Central Coast’s pathways.“We are essentially taking a condition snapshot of every footpath, bike path and shared pathway on the Coast,” Mr Bolgoff said.“This is a huge project but with the use of the quad bikes we plan to complete the process in approximately four weeks.“Our region’s pathway network is a top priority for our community and this assessment will help to inform our ongoing renewal program.“This region-wide audit follows the finalisation of the first Bike Plan and Pedestrian Access and Mobility Plan (PAMP) for the Central Coast, which focuses on new footpath, bike path and shared pathway projects for the Coast over the next 10 years.”Mayor Lisa Matthews said the region-wide assessment is a further demonstration of Council’s commitment to the development and maintenance of an outstanding pathway network for the Central Coast.“With a region as large and beautiful as ours, pathways are important for so many reasons – as part of our transport network, as a means to get fit and active and to boost tourism,” Mayor Matthews said.“It is no small task to take capture video footage of every pathway on the Coast and the information we capture will be vital in helping us to target and plan our pathway renewal program.”The quad bike style assessment vehicles are fitted with cameras focused on the pathway surface only – no recordings of pedestrians, commercial, residential, private property or structures will be taken.Vehicles are operated by certified inspectors and will travel at a brisk walking pace with hazard lights and other warning devices in operation.

Central Coast Council has announced that the 2020 Australia Day Ambassador for the Central Coast is Viki Campbell, Superintendent for the Central Coast Rural Fire Service District.Viki’s tireless work in the emergency response field includes the role of Incident Controller for the 2019-20 bush fire emergency on the Central Coast, an appointment by the NSW Rural Fire Service Commissioner.Her service within emergency response organisations has spanned 30 years with the NSW Rural Fire Service (RFS) and NSW Ambulance.

Applications for Central Coast Council’s second round of Community Grants and Sponsorship funding for 2019/20 are opening soon.

The new wharf at Spencer on the Central Coast will open to boaters this weekend as part of a key wharf implementation project to increase safety and accessibility on the Hawkesbury River.NSW Maritime Executive Director Mark Hutchings said the NSW Government’s Boating Now program provides $98million in grants to provide NSW boaters with better and safer access to NSW waterways with upgrades and new infrastructure such as boat ramps, jetties, pontoons, car parks and sewage pump-out facilities.“This project demonstrates how the NSW Government and local council can work together to provide boating infrastructure for boaters accessing the popular Hawkesbury River,” Mr Hutchings said.Central Coast Council Director Roads, Transport, Drainage and Waste, Boris Bolgoff said the $317,515 project was co-funded by the NSW Government and Central Coast Council and involved removal of the existing timber structure, building a new gangway, pilings, floating pontoon and solar lighting.“The Central Coast community can look forward to enjoying this new facility with increased visibility and accessibility in a variety of tides and weather conditions well into the future,” Mr Bolgoff said.“Spencer is located on the Hawkesbury River and this new wharf is already being utilised to assist in launching powered vessels and non-powered vessels such as kayaks by the local community.”Central Coast Council Mayor Lisa Matthews said the new Spencer Wharf is delivering significant benefits for the local community.“This fantastic new amenity is helping Spencer locals and visitors to enjoy our beautiful waterways,” Mayor Matthews said. “Central Coast Council is pleased to work with the NSW Government through the Boating Now program to deliver new services and infrastructure to our community.“The new wharf at Spencer is a great example of what can be achieved in partnership with the NSW Government.”Information on maritime infrastructure funding and other projects can be found at rms.nsw.gov.au/boatingnow

The newly upgraded amenities building at Heazlett Park, Avoca has opened its doors.The amenities building includes an accessible public toilet, male and female change rooms to service the sporting user groups and an equipment storage area for the Avoca Beach Kayak Club.Council’s Mayor Lisa Matthews said this new public infrastructure was a result of multiple levels of Government and local community groups working together.“This project is a great example of the Australian Government, NSW Government and Council working in consultation with local recreation user groups, including the Avoca Kayak Club who supported the project with in-kind contributions,” said Mayor Matthews.“Council is proud to deliver these new facilities that will benefit both local and visiting users of this popular sportsground and foreshore reserve.“This upgraded facility is a key objective of Council’s Community Strategic Plan which reflects our community’s vision for a liveable coast by ensuring sporting, leisure and open space areas are well maintained and activated.The project has been jointly funded by the Australian Government, NSW Government and Central Coast Council.Member for Terrigal Adam Crouch said the NSW Government was proud to provide $300,000 for this upgraded facility.“Avoca is the training ground for successful Olympians Lachlan Tame and Riley Fitzsimmons and many Junior Kayak Representatives in the Australian squad,” Mr Crouch said.“The Avoca Kayak Club has previously been operating off the back of a trailer and I’m so proud that this new facility provides a permanent home for the Club.Sport Australia CEO Kate Palmer said the Australian Government and Sport Australia are helping to get Australians more active in their own communities by investing more than $100 million in local sport infrastructure projects, as part of the Move It AUS Community Sport Infrastructure Grant program.“Australians love their sport.
